Anatomy
A common groll is comprised of a soft rounded body with (generally) four limbs, around two false eyes, and one large round eye that serves as a method of catching prey as well as for sight. These frogs can have a wide variation of extra appendages/addons, usually in the form of spines or tendrils or horn like protrusions (but are still comprised of the same body material) and any style of skin texture, and in some cases, fur! They should always have an amphibious appearance, however.
Groll frogs DO NOT have conventional mouths, but often their design may give the impression of one! Their feet usually grow to adapt to their environment and can come in many variations. Usually webbed, nails, or sticky fingers are the most widespread. |
THE EYE: Groll frogs have one standard eye that they eat and see with. Like many creatures on Shantyland they're also equipped (usually) with false eyes, which aid in the hunting process in which a groll shoots it's eye from it's socket to catch nearby prey. It pulls it's catch back in and scrapes it down into the eye cavity where the food is melted down and digested. See chart above!
Grolls naturally have four limbs, but recorded cases of more or less exist!
Body Types:
Within the myriad of different looks each individual might have, there are also some variations in size and rarity that can be taken into account when choosing your pet groll. The average frog can be held in an open hand, they are docile and easy to handle! However a subspecies of slippery little tree-bound grolls are smaller, but much faster and will pop right out of your palm and back into the wild any chance they get. They aren't usually adorned with the intricate addons of regular grolls, but they're so TEENY AND CUTE!!! Mini grolls are a vast contrast to the behemoth groll! A large, small dog sized frog that isn't as fast moving, but can do some serious damage if it feels threatened!
Within these size variations are different rarity levels. Mini and Behemoth grolls require a special permit to own, so check in with your head ranger for clearance before making one! Same with mutations!

Common
If you encounter a groll frog in the wild, it is most likely a common groll! While they can have a wide range of colors and adaptations, wild grolls tend to be a little less vibrant or detailed, and tend to have simple fins/spikes/tufts and antennae-like features. These common frogs are still incredibly popular among breeders for the wide range of colors, and of course, the capability for infusion breeding. Common grolls will also have the most stable temperament, which skyrocketed them into the pet trade so quickly to begin with.
Uncommon
Uncommon grolls may have certain features not regularly seen in the wild. Masked grolls are the exception here, as they are more rare but are found readily in the wild populations.
The uncommon traits are usually a genetic alteration that's been bred into them via groll breeders on Shantyland! Outstanding addons and detailed pupils, unusual abilities, or symbiotic relationships to nature, and more/less limbs/eyes than expected all fall under the uncommon category, as do Mini Grolls and Behemoth Grolls.
There aren't super specific rules or variations between common or uncommon grolls, so you don't have to worry about labels too much!

Mutation
These frogs are the head turners, but aren't necessarily the most sought after. Their mutation or high-success rate infusion usually leaves them with a shorter lifespan and more extreme personalities or behavioral problems. You must have permission to create one and pay a small fee with your permit that outlines the strict "no release" policy that comes with these frogs! The nature division doesn't want mutated frogs getting back into the wild and breeding with the healthy populations, and it's our job as rangers to prevent such a disaster from occurring again! The rise in popularity of groll breeders caused surge in mutations many years ago, followed quickly by strict rules and regulations.
ABILITIES and extras
Grolls have evolved over thousands of years to survive and adapt to an ever changing world! Some have even developed a special skill or ability to defend itself from predators or to better capture their prey! When you capture or hatch your groll, take note on what sort of unique features it might have, and consider how it might help them survive in the wild!! Sometimes these skills have to develop, so your groll can't immediately be capable of hypnosis or pyrokenisis, however, you can begin growing and expanding on these skills through their story and art! (aka, no intense abilities right off the bat)
